Over the past 40 years, Gloucester County has made significant progress in protecting and restoring the environment. Much of that progress is attributable to efforts to control pollution from industrial and municipal wastewater treatment facilities and landfills that were adversely affecting groundwater, surface water and air quality.

Environmental issues remain, however, including non-point source pollution (NSP), headwaters destruction, groundwater (and drinking water) contamination, chronically impaired surface waters and aquatic habitat degradation. These problems require more complex and comprehensive solutions that take into account both today’s needs and those of future generations. These water quality problems can’t be addressed at the end of a pipe through regulation and enforcement; they will require lifestyle changes by all of us.
